Smart City interaction with Secretary, Urban Development, Government of Chhattisgarh, Shri R.P. Mandal

A delegation of AmCham’s Smart City Infrastructure Consortium Companies were led by Mr. Ajay Singha, Executive Director, AmCham India,  at an interactive meeting held in Bilaspur/ Raipur, with the Principle Secretary, Urban Development, Government of Chhattisgarh Mr. R. P Mandal, who along with other senior officials including Collector & District Magistrate Mr. P. Anbalagan, Commissioner Bilaspur Municipal Corporation, Ms. Ranu Sahu, Commissioner Bilaspur Division, Mr. Sonmoni Borah, had extensive deliberations on the scope of US private sector participation in Chhattisgarh infrastructure development sectors. The delegation also called on Minister, Urban Development, Govt of Chattisgarh, Mr. Amar Agarwa,l and apprised of the offerings of the US Consortium based at AmCham. The Minister has asked AmCham to prepare a composite document for solutions provided by US companies for Retrofit & Redevelopment projects for Bilaspur city. This task is being undertaken by Aecom’s Saurabh Srivastava, and will be completed and presented to the Minister subsequently.

India’s economic performance during the first three decades since independence was christened the “Hindu” rate of growth, a term first used by Prof. Rajkrishna. This was stated by Dr. Sunder Ramaswamy during the August breakfast meet. That reference is fast fading away, thanks to the remarkable transformation in India during the last two decades. Since 1980, its economic growth rate has more than doubled, rising from 1.7 percent (in per-capita terms) in 1950-1980 to 3.8 percent in 1980-2000. Shackled by the socialist policies and the “license-permit-quota raj” of the past, India used to serve as the exemplar of development strategies gone wrong……

Meeting with Chief Minister of Karnataka

Members of AmCham’s National Executive Board, members of AmCham Karnataka Executive Committee and U.S. Embassy officials met with the Chief Minister of Karnataka, Mr. Siddaramaiah, on 25th August 2015 in Bangalore. The Chief Minister was accompanied by Mr. Kaushik Mukherjee, Chief Secretary; Ms K. Ratna Prabha, Additional Chief Secretary, Commerce & Industries Department; and other officials of the Government of Karnataka.


The Chief Minister, in his address, welcomed the U.S. companies to investment in Karnataka, particularly in automobiles, aerospace, infrastructure, healthcare, textiles, and tourism. The new Industrial Policy had just been announced. The Bangalore-Mumbai corridor would provide good opportunities to U.S. companies to participate.


Ms Vanitha Narayanan, Chairperson of AmCham; and Managing Director – India / South Asia, IBM India Pvt. Ltd., who led the AmCham group, thanked the Chief Minister for giving AmCham members an opportunity to meet with him. She said that large U.S. companies had invested in Karnataka and AmCham’s agenda and focus was to help build digital India and provide technologies for smart cities.

The Second Meeting of AmCham’s Tax, Tariff and Regulatory Affairs Committee for the year 2015-16 was held on 25th August 2015 at Bangalore under the chairmanship of Mr. Indraneel Roy Choudhury, Chairman of the Committee; and Partner, PwC. Mr. Vikas Vasal, Co-Chairman of the Committee; and Partner, KPMG, was also present.  Around 40 members participated. The meeting, inter alia, discussed APA, BEPS, ICDS and GST.

AmCham’s SCL Committee Concall- Sharing and Learning

The SCL Sharing and Learning Concall opened with Ms. Surabhi Wahal welcoming the members and sharing the agenda for the call. Mr. Nikhil expressed gratitude to Mr. Rajender Jog for taking the initiative at this meeting to share ‘Best practices in Supply Chain at Dow)


Mr. Rajender Jog began his presentation with a brief introduction on Dow India and his experience across various segments within Dow. The presentation was an insightful sharing of Dow India’s diversity across the sciences of biology, chemicals and physics; its marked presence in electronic and functional material, infrastructure solutions, agricultural sciences, performance materials, feedstock, energy, among others. Dow has made its presence in India- in Gujarat, Hyderabad, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu with manufacturing sites, application development centers and centers for excellence. Dow India also focuses highly on CSR through various initiatives in health, hygiene, environment and education……

Meeting with Joint Secretary, DIPP and Director, Department of Commerce

AmCham members met with Mr. Rajiv Aggarwal, Joint Secretary, Department of Industrial Promotion and Policy; and Ms Mugdha Sinha, Director, Department of Commerce, Government of India, on 19th August 2015 in New Delhi.


The purpose of the interaction was to firm up issues, concerns and challenges which can be taken up during the forthcoming Government-to-Government Strategic and Commercial Dialogue taking place in Washington D.C. Challenges related to ICT, medical devices, aviation and taxation were taken up in greater detail. Another meeting for ICT and civil aviation is planned before the bilateral dialogue. The date and time will be announced shortly.

AmCham’s SCL Core Committee Concall

12th August 2015

The agenda of the meeting was to share updates on the efforts by members towards the forthcoming SCL meetings and events. Industry experts who could be approached as speakers were decided upon.


As the invitation to the event would be extended beyond the SCL committee members, it was decided to have an internal face to face committee meeting between 2pm- 3pm where committee members can brainstorm and invite comments on SCL challenges. The meeting would be followed by the event from 3pm to 6pm. A proposal to extend the event invitation to other AmCham sectoral committees that might benefit from the experiences and discussions, thereby gaining greater traction and more shared value. An update was also shared about the white paper being worked upon between AmCham and Deloitte with regards to the challenges in the Supply Chain and Logistic sector which would be presented to relevant Government stakeholders of India and the U.S.

Meeting with Urban Development Secretary, Government of Chhattisgarh

A preliminary meeting with Principal Secretary, Urban Development, Government of Chhattisgarh, Shri R.P. Mandal IAS was held on 11th August at Raipur. It was indicated that the State Government is keen to develop Bilaspur as a Smart City. A combination of Greenfield, Retrofit and Redevelopment projects as per the GOI guidelines is envisaged. Consequently, AmCham members in the Smart City business will visit Bilaspur and Raipur and engage with the local administration to understand the needs and requirements and provide inputs for developing a Smart City road map for Bilaspur.

Meeting of Committee to Fast-Track Implementation of U.S. Investments in India

Mr. Amitabh Kant, Secretary, DIPP, called a meeting of the Committee to Fast-Track Implementation of U.S. Investments in India on 3rd August 2015 in Udyog Bhawan, New Delhi. AmCham members, who had submitted their specific issues were called for the meeting. Secretary, DIPP responded to the progress made on their concerns with the help of representatives of other Ministries called for this meeting. While some issues raised by member companies were resolved, many remained unresolved. Secretary, DIPP promised to take them up with the concerned Ministries.

The meeting began with a reflection on the life and contribution of Late Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and the learnings that can be implemented through his example. It was decided that the Supply Chain and Logistics Committee event to be held of the 15th of October would focus on different perspectives  to GST, Skills Development and Infrastructure keeping in mind Make in India. For this it was suggested to connect and collaborate with APIC CPIM, Government officials and industry experts from large liner and 3PL as speakers, thus building a synergy that would enable sharing of new trends, technology, developments and approaches in Supply Chain management.


A presentation on the SCL committee highlighting its initiatives and to educate the larger group that Supply Chain is more than only logistics would be shared in August to the NEB. Contributions and insights towards the content of this presentation would be made by the Core Committee members which would then be presented to the Board by Mr. Nikhil Kush.

breakfast interactive session on the “Changing Landscape of Higher Education globally” and the crucial requirement of bridging the education-to-employment gap, and how to connect employers into the Higher Education process. Graham Doxey, the Founder of Knod Global Learning Network was the guest speaker. Graham, formerly of Merrill Lynch and Lehman Brothers, explained how he pioneered an experiential learning model for Computer Science graduates in the United States, and also implemented this in a wider scale when he was the CEO of Laureate Education in Asia. Knod seeks to connect Employers and Educators and to put their requirements at the heart of the education process. The theme of Graham Doxey presentation was “Closing the Education-to-Employment Gap” Graham spoke about how Educators and Employers can come together to develop the right skills and competencies, and thereby, closing the skills gap and solving the retention problem. Mr. Dinesh Agarwal, Chairman AmCham Eastern Region gave the welcome remarks; Amada Kidwai Regional Director AmCham Eastern Region did the introductions. The Concluding remark was given by Mr. K.P. Sengupta, Executive Committee member.


Session on Changes in Industrial Policy / PF and incorporation

A session was held for the AmCham Members on changes in Industrial policy on July 24, 2015. The principal secretary Commerce & Industries and Energy addressed the small gathering. Later the panelists comprising, Uma Devatagupta of Signode India, Kiranmai Pendyala of AMD, Padmaja Chowdary of C3i and Sriram of D E Shaw discussed on how the changes in PF can be incorporated and encourage savings for the employees, including the UAN (to avoid withdrawal but all transfer) and the pension scheme.

AmCham Aviation Core Committee members Meeting with Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation

A core group of AmCham Aviation Committee members met with Shri R. N. Choubey, Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation and shared with him the challenges being faced in the Aviation sector. The Secretary requested the members to share with his team concrete solutions to the issues raised and promised to take them up with the concerned authorities. He commended the recommendations made by the group and expressed interest in a subsequent meeting with the team at a later date.

Smart cities coordination conference call with US Embassy, FCS, Trade Deptt & USTDA to review progress of US private sector engagement with Indian Stakeholders in Smart cities & way forward

A coordination and Review Call to discuss the progress of engagements seen at the G-to-G level, particularly in the three cities where the US has been asked to play the lead was organized by Amcham Infrastructure & Smart City Committee. The participants included US Embassy’s Minister Counsellor John McCaslin, USTDA’s Regional Director, Henry Steingass and Jamie Merriman, and USIBC’s Ketan Thakkar. A number of the infrastructure consortium’s member companies such as Aecom, CH2M Hill, Cisco, IBM, UTC, 3M, Honeywell, Mastercard, Oracle , HP etc  participated and contributed to the discussion.  With the Central Govt having launched the Smart City Mission guidelines on June 25 defining the various aspects of the selection, evaluation, implementation and financing of the Smart cities program, it was consensually agreed that States like Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal are further along in setting up mechanisms and roadmaps to develop their respective Smart City vision/s……

AmCham’s Western Region and Supply Chain Committee hosted an event- SCL: With a special focus on GST, Skill’s Development & GST’s implications on Supply Chain and Infrastructure. The event, which was well attended by members of the committee and SCL leaders of member companies aimed to be an informative and interactive session. The afternoon began with Ms. Surabhi Wahal, Regional Director – Western Region, AmCham India welcoming the participants, followed by Mr. Nikhil Kush, South Asia Supply Chain Leader, E.I. Dupont India Pvt. Ltd and Chairperson of the Supply Chain & Logistics Committee, AmCham India giving the opening remarks to usher in the event. “Smart Cities Mission 2015”- Coordination and Review Call

A Teleconference call on “Smart cities Mission 2015” was organized by AmCham’s Smart Cities & Infrastructure committee on July 16. The call was held at the request of the committee members to know the status of Government-to-Government level  consultations taking place in the three cities of Vizag, Allahabad and Ajmer.US Government participants from FCS, Mr. John McCaslin, Minister Counsellor, and USTDA Regional Director, Mr. Henry Steingass, updated the participating US private sector companies on their recent discussions and follow up developments post the signing of the three MOUs between the States of Telengana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. The roles of various agencies involved in multiple stages of developments was discussed. A walk- through of the recently launched Smart Cities mission was also provided by Shivani Raina, Program Director, AmCham India and members queries on the various aspects of the Mission were addressed as appropriate. The participating companies included IBM, UTC, CISCO, UL, Corning, HP,AECOM, Ch2m Hill etc.

AmCham’s SCL Core Committee Concall

The main agenda of the concall was to form a skeletal base for the SCL Committee Industry Visit in pune scheduled for December 2015. As a large number of SCL Committee members are based in Mumbai/ Pune, the Committee anticipates greater participation. GE and Honeywell were proposed to be the 2 main facilities to be visited. GE being the main facility to visit which will provide a multimodal perspective not only in terms of supply chain but a unique multidivisional view of other sectors as aviation and power components as well.


It was decided to fix the industry visit for a date between the 1st to the 10th of December 2015. Sites such as Meritor, Inc. Automotive Axles Limited (Mysore), Toyota (Bangalore) and Ford (Chennai) among other American companies were suggested for future industry visits. To increase member participation at future F2F events/meetings, it was suggested to try Web Conferencing as a medium.

The Secretary has agreed to meet AmCham members to discuss issues to be taken up in the U.S.-India Strategic and Commercial Dialogue. On the same occasion, he will also interact with members on individual company matters which need to be resolved for efficient business functioning. The date of the proposed meeting will be announced shortly.

The Chairman of AmCham’s Aviation Committee, Mr. Palash Roy Chowdhury, Country Manager – India, United Technologies Corporation India Pvt. Ltd. (Pratt & Whitney); Knowledge Partner of the Committee,  Mr. Amber Dubey, Partner, KPMG in India; and Mr. Ajay Singha, Executive Director, AmCham, met Mr. R.N. Choubey, Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India, on 8th July 2015 in his office.


They apprised him about the past engagements which AmCham had with the Ministry of Civil Aviation. The subjects, which were discussed, were establishment of an eco-system for encouraging MRO activities, regional air connectivity, issues relating to cargo operations and related matters. While appreciating the issues taken up by AmCham, the Secretary immediately granted another meeting with the select group of AmCham members in the civil aviation sector to give inputs for the new Civil Aviation policy which the Ministry plans to roll out next month.

Roundtable: Preparing for U.S. – India Strategic & Commercial Dialogue

AmCham hosted a roundtable discussion with the U.S. embassy officials to provide industry inputs for the U.S. – India Strategic & Commercial Dialogue scheduled to take place in Washington D.C. between 20-22nd September. The discussion was moderated by Atul Dhawan of Deloitte and Chairman of AmCham’s Economic Affairs Committee. Remarks on the forthcoming dialogue and related issues were made by U.S. embassy representatives George Sibley, Counselor for Economic Affairs and Environment, Science & Technology, and John McCaslin, Counselor for Commercial Affairs. Comments were also made by Jinu Koola, Financial Attaché to India and Scott Sindelar, Counselor for Agricultural Affairs.


Presentations were made on the opportunities and challenges impacting U.S. industry in the following sectors: healthcare, medical devices, agriculture and food processing, pharma, supply chain and logistics, procurement, ICT, energy, manufacturing and IPR. AmCham’s Economic Affairs Committee is in the process of compiling a comprehensive document on the same. CSR Best Practice Visit

AmCham CSR Committee organized a best practice visit for our committee members on 7th July 2015 at Tapkan School, Tapkan Village, Haryana. The initiative was appreciated by all the attendees. We visited the school and understood the challenges faced by them. It definitely has motivated the participants to consider similar effective activities for their own organizations.  The requirement of the involvement of all the concerned parties: school head, villagers, children and the project managers for the success of a CSR programme is well established in the Tapkan School Project. The key take away was connecting CSR officials from our member companies, learning the best practices followed for a school education project and planning thereafter how they can help this project to do better. We plan to do more Best Practice Visits in future.

AmCham Infrastructure Consortium meets with Secretary, Ministry of Urban Development, Govt. of India

A delegation of select members of Infrastructure Consortium led by Executive Director, Mr. Ajay Singha, met with Secretary Sh. Madhusudan Prasad, Ministry of Urban Development, on July 2nd and briefed him on the AmCham engagements with state governments of Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh on Smart cities and Digital India. The Secretary encouraged the activities of AmCham and gave some insights on how the Smart cities program was to be rolled out post the Smart City guidelines issued by the ministry on June 25th.


The meeting was followed by a more detailed interaction with Joint Secretary, Dr. Sameer Sharma, where Industry representatives from GE, UTC, Ch2M Hill, UL and HP raised specific concerns and sought clarity on implementation aspects and models of engagement for private sector participation, for Smart city project planning. Dr. Sharma addressed all concerns and gave a broad overview of the next steps to be progressed on the pan – India selection of the first 100 smart cities by the year end. Joint Secretary Sharma also expressed his keenness to address a wider audience and initiate a dialogue with Amcham members on the Smart City Implementation aspects over a roundtable program to be organized sometime in August.

AmCham co-sponsored The 239th U.S. Independence Day Celebration: Take Me Out to the Ballgame

AmCham co-sponsored the 239th U.S. Independence Day celebrations on July 02, 2015 at Hotel Taj Palace, New Delhi with a rather interesting theme – the American national sport, baseball.  The venue was decorated with baseball jerseys and guests were served typical baseball game refreshments, like hotdogs and popcorn. The winner of The Million Dollar Arm, Dinesh Patel, who went on to pitch for the Pittsburgh Pirates was also present. Adding flair to the celebration of independence was a stellar performance by the US Army’s 25th Infantry Division Band, Paradise Brass, which came all the way from Hawaii. U.S. Ambassador Richard Verma welcomed the guest of honor General V K Singh, Minister of State for External Affairs, Government of India. Over 500 people took part in the celebrations. Ambassadors of Ireland, Austria, High Commissioner of Cyprus, and Minister Counsellor of British High Commission were also present.

The agenda of the meeting was to discuss updates on the upcoming AmCham Supply Chain and Logistics Committee Event on 16th July. The Core Committee unanimously agreed to have a larger outreach to encourage participation. GST being one of the key topics, member representatives from the Tax and Finance departments were to be invited.


Ahead of the 7th July- US-India Strategic & Commercial Dialogue, Mr. Nikhil Kush shared the feedback received from members highlighting the key issues and challenges with respect to Supply Chain and Logistics. Post the discussion, 5 key issues were highlighted to be represented at the US-India Strategic and Commercial Dialogue meeting.

  1. The need for national registration laws for vehicles
  2. The SVB policies and renewal processes
  3. The introduction of Form 15 CA / CB for the import of goods
  4. E-network
  5. Poor infrastructure


Ms. Surabhi Wahal invited views of the members on developing White papers by the SCL Committee. It was suggested that it would work well to reach out to individuals who are pursuing a Phd research on supply chain or logistic issues. The committee members would be happy to share their experiences and inputs on the proposed field, and in return the individual could later share the observations and conclusions of his / her research. It was also suggested that the core committee would reach out to established institutes and their supply chain management centers and check the feasibility of this initiative and discuss them in the next meeting.

AmCham’s Meeting with Justice A.P. Shah Committee

AmCham was invited for a hearing on MAT issues by the Committee on Direct Taxes headed by Justice A.P. Shah on 30th June 2015. AmCham was represented by Mr. Young Lee, Executive Director, Morgan Stanley | Finance; Mr. Anjani Sharma, Partner, B S R & Co. LLP; Mr. Keyur Shah, Partner, E&Y; and Ms. Madhvi Kataria, Deputy Executive Director, AmCham.
AmCham representatives highlighted the adverse impact of levy of MAT on FIIs and how FIIs were treated worldwide. The impact this move had on foreign investment was also discussed. A note on MAT was presented to the Committee. A power point presentation was also submitted highlighting the main issues relating to MAT. AmCham Eastern Region Partners Hyatt Regency Kolkata in a Blood Donation Campm

AmCham Eastern Region Partnered with Hyatt Regency Kolkata a member organization in a Blood donation initiative on June 23rd.  This was done in coordination with the Lions Club International Thakurpukur. Lions Club International is world’s largest service organization at present with more than one million members at 211 countries.  Lions Club of Thakurpukur being a branch under them. They are involved in several social service activities for underprivileged people and children like free health camps and dental camps, diabetic and thalassemia awareness, plantations, free book/ cloths distribution among old aged/orphanages, puja parikrama for street children, etc.

Several member companies of AmCham Eastern Region took part in this humanitarian cause.  These were associates from Pepci Co, Joy Global (India) Limited, Ixia Technologies, Ernst &Young LLP and Acclaris who took part in this very noble CSR initiative of Hyatt Regency Kolkata.

Meeting with Rajya Sabha Select Committee on GST Bill

The Tax and Tariff Committee represented by Mr. Vivek Mishra, Partner – Indirect Tax, PricewaterhouseCoopers Private Limited; Mr. Pratik Jain, Partner, KPMG in India; Mr. R. Sridhar, Vice President – Taxation, Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt. Ltd.; and Mr. Ajay Singha, Executive Director, AmCham; met with the Chairman and members of the Rajya Sabha Select Committee on GST Bill on 16th June 2015. Besides, the Chairman, Mr. Bhupender Yadav, 14 members of the Select Committee were present.


While submitting the concerns and suggestions of U.S. companies on the provisions of the GST Bill, AmCham representatives briefed the Committee that some of the proposed provisions would not be in the best interest of the industry or the economy and needed a review. AmCham representatives were assured that their suggestions would be given due consideration.

A Virtual Meet on “Can SMAC transform the future of HR” by Obed Louissant-IBM, Mr. Abhijit Bhaduri-WIPRO and Mr. Harish Vaidyanathan-Microsoft

This virtual meet was a pioneering effort to take the work of our HR Committee to the extended HR teams in AmCham companies.  We had a huge participation of about 300 HR colleagues from AmCham member organizations. We managed to rope in three eminent speakers from the world – Obed Louissant, VP HR, Watson and Research-IBM, Abhijit Bhaduri, Chief Learning Officer-WIPRO and Harish Vaidyanathan, Director ISV-Microsoft. It was a very successful event and proved to be a great value addition for the   HR teams of our members on this emerging theme.

The session was based on her upcoming book titled “Can I have it all” which talks about her journey as a woman leader in a complex, global corporate environment. Using personal anecdotes and drawing upon the experiences of other women, the session showcased key learnings that allowed Anu to stay on the leadership journey and defined experiences at various life stages, juxtaposed with key life lessons such as the value of Clarity, Conviction, Courage, Collaboration etc. The forum also provided a unique opportunity to interact with Ms. Anuranjita Kumar, , also named as HR Leader of the Year recently at the 2015 ABP News HR and Leadership Awards.

AmCham, in partnership with Bureau of Industry and Security, Embassy of United States and Ficci organized capacity building workshops on 8th June at Bengaluru and 10th, June 2015 in Mumbai to educate Indian companies on India’s and United States’ strategic trade controls impacting their industry. The focus was on U.S. Export Controls (EAR and ITAR) – Understanding the principles, differences and licensing process behind the main U.S. Export Control Regimes. Simultaneously; panel discussions focusing on working with U.S. companies in Aerospace & Defense sector was organized.

Amcham’s Supply Chain & Logistics (SCL) Core Committee

The meeting was held with an aim to plan for the upcoming SCL Face to Face meeting to be held in on 16th July, 2015 at the Diebold office in Mumbai. GST, Skills Development and Infrastructure were finalized as the key topics to be addressed at the meeting. It was decided to invite an experienced speaker to share expertise on the particular topic, which will be followed by a moderated Q&A session. The meeting will be open to only SCL members.


Ideas for an SCL Committee newsletter as well as an industry visit to Krishnapatnam port (Chennai) were put forth- which were left open to be deliberated upon until the next meeting.

Select AmCham Defense committee members met with Committee of Experts for Amendments to DPP 2013 including Formulation of Policy Framework at Purple Bay, Jodhpur Hostel. AmCham organizes Plant Visit for employees of member companies

The Tamil Nadu Chapter took a delegation of 50 employees (across all levels of hierarchies) from member companies for a 5 company plant visit to American manufacturing facilities at Mahindra World City SEZ on Friday, May 22, 2015.Companies visited: NCR Corporation, Federal Mogul, Lincoln Electric, American Axle Manufacturing and Timken.Objective of the visit: The plant visit is part of AmCham’s Sharing Best Practices by the Practitioners program. The AmCham delegation visiting manufacturing facilities to see firsthand the best practices employed at the plants visited. The visit also enables networking and improved relations amongst operations personnel on the shop floor.


It was indeed an eye-opener for many of the participants to know that American companies in Chennai manufactures some unique products employing state of the art technology.The visit began at 7.30 am with breakfast served to all 50 participants at the NCR Corp. manufacturing facility. Refreshments were provided by Federal Mogul, Lincoln Electric and American Axle Manufacturing. Lunch was served at the Timken facility. The tour ended at 4.30 pm.

The First Meeting of AmCham’s Tax, Tariff and Regulatory Affairs Committee for the year 2015-16 was held at the office of PwC, Gurgaon, under the chairmanship of Mr. Indraneel Roy Choudhury, Partner, PwC. The Committee discussed the Plan of Work for the year 2015-16 and decided to focus on issues such as Income Computation and Disclosure Standards (ICDS); clarity on subsidies in Finance Bill; POEM; GST; MAT on FIIs; GAAR; BEPS amongst others.

An informative presentation was shared by Mr. Raju Bawankar, Supply Chain Leader, Caterpillar India Pvt. Ltd. on ‘Ports in India’. It focused on major ports on the Western, Eastern and Southern coastline of India and the 2 largest ports in the country- NhavaSheva and Chennai Port to further understand and compare cargo traffic, container handling. Container terminal facilities, connectivity, infrastructure, congestions, storage space, etc. An interactive Q&A session that followed addressed challenges faced in terms of lack of availability of truck transport to & from Chennai port and the ideal optimisation of container usage to reduce and control the possibility of wastage of space and time.


An update was also shared on the efforts towards the 2 sub-teams- GST and Skills development.

Members were also advised that to help introduce AmCham to potential member companies in the Pune, Mr. Ajay Singha and Ms. Kaku Nahate were in talks with the US Embassy to explore the prospect of organizing a reception for the US Ambassador there. In addition to helping AmCham build bridges with US Companies based in Pune, this would help ascertain the relevance and feasibility of expanding the catchment area of AmCham WR beyond Mumbai.

Ms. Leick-Milde briefed Ms. Cameron and said that given the rules and regulation that govern opening of an American School in Kolkata, it would probably at this time not be a workable proposition.

Amcham’s Supply Chain & Logistics (SCL) Core Committee

The meeting of the SCL Committee was held to determine the path for the year 2015-2016. It was decided that the Committee would continue to hold its monthly concallscovering Best Practices in supply chain and logistics and will be a platform to share and learn from other members. In addition to it, the SCL Committee will hold 4 face-to-face meetings in the year.


The 1st Face to Face meeting scheduled to be held in July would focus on 2 main themes: GST & Skill Development. The Committee subdivided themselves into groups to contribute ideas on their respective themes. It was also finalized that the SCL Core Committee would connect on a fortnightly basis so as to review the efforts made by members towards their sub-teams.

Amcham facilitated an agriculture briefing to The Dwight D. Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy of the National Defense University study group during their visit to India. Hosted by Mosaic India, Mr. Naveen Chahal, Managing Director, gave an insightful overview of the agriculture business in India as well as the opportunities and challenges in the sector. Interactive Session with Mr. Jayant Sinha, Union Minister of State for Finance

Amcham organized an interactive session with Mr. Jayant Sinha, Union Minister of State for Finance in New Delhi. The U.S. Ambassador in India, H.E. Mr. Richard R. Verma, also made a few opening observations. Mr. Sinha spoke on Budget 2015 and presented to the members the philosophy on which the Budget was presented. This was followed by specific points raised by Amcham members. Mr. Banmali Agrawala, Chairman, Amcham and Mr. Pratyush Kumar, President, Boeing India, also briefly addressed the members.


The CSR Committee Meeting

Mr. Deepak Jolly, Vice President – Public Affairs & Communications chaired the CSR Committee meeting. Mr. Dilip Chenoy, MD, National Skill Development Corporation, NSDC gave a presentation on Multiplier Effect of CSR Contribution to Skill Development. Issues discussed were Skill gaps; non-availably of trainers; training needs. Mr. Mohit Gandhi made a PowerPoint presentation on – Creating a successful CSR Network, and sought suggestion for implementation.

Post Budget Live Video Conference

The Tax, Tariff and Regulatory Affairs Committee of Amcham held a video conference on Budget 2015 on 2nd March 2015 in the four offices of EY at Bangalore, Chennai, Gurgaon and Mumbai.


The panel discussion was moderated by Mr. Sudhir Kapadia, Chairman, Amcham’s Tax, Tariff and Regulatory Affairs Committee; and National Tax Leader – EY India. The panellists were:

Meeting with H.E. Professor Sudharshan Seneviratne, High Commissioner of Sri Lanka

A few members of Amcham along with Ms Madhvi Kataria, Deputy Executive Director, Amcham, called on H.E. Professor Sudharshan Seneviratne, High Commissioner of Sri Lanka, on 2nd March 2015 in his office to apprise him of the interest of U.S. companies based in India to invest / do business in / with Sri Lanka and the proposal to take a delegation to Sri Lanka in the coming months.

Government of Andhra Pradesh has laid out a vision “To develop Andhra Pradesh as an Innovation Society of global repute, with a focus on enhancing the quality of life of its citizens, through high-quality education and healthcare, increased productivity in agriculture and allied activities, creation of requisite employment potential by promoting electronics and IT industries, and above all, by providing good governance”. To facilitate this interaction a teleconference call was organized with (AP) Government for reaching out to key business leaders from leading IT & ITES companies to arrive at meaningful alliances in overall Development of the State. Mr. J. Satyanarayana, Advisor (e-Governance, Electronics & IT), lead the Government side interaction. Amcham member companies from the IT/ ITES sectors participated.
