Make in India – Exporting to Global Markets
AMCHAM organized a brainstorming session on ‘Make in India – Exporting to Global Markets’ on September 17th in New Delhi. The first session was on ‘Accelerating Electronics Manufacturing in India: U.S. Companies.’ Ms. Ranjana Khanna, Director General CEO, AMCHAM made opening remarks and welcomed participants. Mr. Richard Hopkins, Global President, Flex Group, set the scene and theme for the deliberations. Mr. Amit Bansal, Co-Chairman – Manufacturing Committee, AMCHAM and Managing Director, Corning India, made remarks. Ms. Anubhuti Bhrany, Head – Government Relations, India, HP India, facilitated the conversation. Mr. Sanjay Kumar Rakesh, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology and Dr. Arabinda Mitra, Scientific Secretary, Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, joined the session.
The second session focused on ‘Exports for India’s Growth to a $5 Trillion Economy.’ Mr. Ashwini Aggarwal, Director – Government Affairs, Applied Materials India, set the scene and Mr. Arijit Sen, Co-Chairman – Manufacturing Committee, AMCHAM and Senior Director, Global Government Affairs and Public Policy, Flex Group, facilitated the conversation. Ms. Asha Nangia, Senior Director, Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology and Ms. Anna Roy, Sr. Adviser, NITI Aayog participated in the brainstorming session.
The conversation revolved around how the electronics manufacturing in the country could be given a boost through incentivizing exports and positioning India as part of the global value chain. Some topics that were touched upon included MEIS, enhancing the ecosystem of component manufacturing, vocational training, expansion of mega projects, utilization of SEZs, phased manufacturing program for select sectors, introduction of competitive benchmarking, R&D tax benefits, integrating into the global value chain and tax policy recommendations, among other topics.
AMCHAM would prepare a whitepaper to carry the discussions forward. The session was followed by networking over cocktails. The event was sponsored by Flex and Applied Materials.
