AGRICULTURE AND FOOD PROCESSING COMMITTEE
Chairman: Mr. Simon George
Secretariat: Wg Cdr Rajiv Anand
Secretariat: Ms. Komple Sharma
Agriculture is the mainstay of the majority of the Indian population. The sector contributes approximately 17% to the total GDP and provides employment to nearly 60% of the population. The Union Budget of 2019-2020 also placed immense importance to this sector and increased the budgetary allocation by nearly 140%.
With the food processing industry acting as the perfect catalyst, India’s contribution to world food trade is increasing every year. According to the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), the Indian food processing industry has cumulatively attracted Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) equity inflow of about US$ 8.57 billion between April 2000 and December 2018. The committee aims to align itself with the government’s twin objectives of doubling farmer’s income and reducing food wastage which in turn will ensure more food for the growing population.
This committee will meet regularly to discuss developments in their respective industry sectors, prepare position papers on issues impacting U.S. business in India, engage with political leadership and government officials on policies and procedures announced from time to time, make representations to Indian government, and plan activities for knowledge sharing and sharing of best practices.
