Eastern Region Executive Committee Meeting

Mr. Sengupta informed the EC that he would be seeking clarification on points related to the process of election for EC membership from the Delhi Secretariat. He informed members that the date for the NEB meeting had not been finalized. He would also be speaking to the Delhi Secretariat for clarification on meetings to be scheduled.

A teleconference call was organized on 10th August with Mr. NSN Murty, Executive Director & Smart Cities Leader at PwC, to discuss and understand the smart city programs for the state of Madhya Pradesh. The focus was on the three designated smart cities Bhopal, Indore and Jabalpur. Mr. Murty gave a detailed walk through of the smart city visions, the special purpose vehicle (SPVs), the funding mechanisms and private sector participation models for the three cities. He highlighted the priority developmental projects and proposed pan-city initiatives that are under various roll out stages. A larger outreach plan for AmCham member companies with each SPV was discussed as well. Companies that participated included Honeywell, 3M, UL, UTC, Trimble, OshKosh, Xylem, Ch2M, Louis Berger, HP, Motorola Solutions, Ingersoll Rand and IBM.

AmCham Defense Committee members met with Senator Ben Cardin (the Democratic Senator from Maryland) and his team members and apprised him of overall business environment for U.S. defense companies in India and the current challenges they encounter. Telangana Government Delegation to U.S.

The Telangana Government requested AmCham to organize a few meetings in the U.S. through the India offices of U.S. companies for the Telangana Government delegation. The Government of Telangana delegation was led by the Minister for Information Technology and Industries, Mr. K. T. Rama Rao. Mr. Rama Rao visited the U.S. from 23rd May to 2nd June 2016 and he was accompanied by a few senior officials. A presentation was given by AmCham Smart Cities group led by Dr. Jaijit Bhattacharya, Partner, KPMG, based on the earlier interactions with Ajmer to help identify the possible and early kick off projects under their smart city proposal. The CEO of JSCL informed member companies that the development work in the Pink City will be carried out in two different strategic components: area-based development and pan-city development. Under the area-based development, an area of 650 acres of the Walled City (or old city) between the Albert Hall and the Jorawar Singh Gate has been identified for retrofitting. Under the pan-city development, the infrastructure outside the Walled City would be strengthened with improved facilities like solid-waste management and smart multi-modern mobility. Under the pan-city smart solution, a single problem for the whole city would be selected and smart solutions will be identified.

ECP meeting with Meredydd Evans, PNNL (U.S. Department of Energy)

An ECP meeting was held with Meredydd Evans, Senior Staff Scientist, Joint Global Change Research Institute, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory  (PNNL) to discuss the Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) Seminar organized in Visakhapatnam. This seminar was held to promote ECBC awareness in Vizag and provide recommendations on code adoption and implementation. The Vishakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (VUDA) and U.S. Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL)  jointly organized this seminar at Vizag and as well as one at GIFT city Gujarat. ECP members have expressed interest in these two cities for ECBC promotion activities and intend to engage with the Department of Energy and its labs for their other upcoming programs for ECBC promotion in other cities i.e. Ahmedabad and Delhi going forward.

AmCham was a supporting partner for the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) organized National Conference on Export Controls in Bangalore. The event brought together the major business entities handling defense, dual-use items and technologies, the relevant Government of India officials including from MEA and DGFT, as well as export control experts from the U.S., Japan and German to discuss the SCOMET export control system, recent updates to SCOMET and India\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\’s engagement with the multilateral export control regimes (Nuclear Suppliers Group, Missile Technology Control Regime, Wassenaar Arrangement and Australia Group).

The committee for the healthcare conference, slated to be held on 16th September, met at Eli India Global Services, Hi Tech City on 22nd February 2016 to discuss and brainstorm on the theme and the areas we would like to see addressed. The members decided to broaden the base to include pharma and life sciences too.  Deliberation is still on, for the theme which would be either – global integration with the sub theme relating to epidemic or epidemic with the sub theme relating to global integration – end stage life threatening diseases (capture and slow down progress of the disease) covering bio similar, data integrity and quality.

The Companies Law Committee set up by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs recently issued its report suggesting many changes in the Companies Act, 2013.
