Meeting
with Mrs. Nirupama Rao, Ambassador designate
to the United States - 10th August 2011
The
American Chamber of Commerce in India (Amcham)
organised a meeting with Mrs. Nirupama Rao, Ambassador
designate to the United States. Ambassador A.
Peter Burleigh, Charge d’Affaires, U.S.
Embassy, was also present. The meeting was attended
by members of Amcham and senior officials from
the U.S. Embassy.
Mr.
Atul Singh, Chairman, Amcham, welcoming Ambassador
Nirupama Rao and Ambassador Peter Burleigh, said
that ties between India and the U.S. had been
on the upswing in the past decade and the nature
of Indo-U.S. relationship had changed fundamentally
to enable cooperation in a vast number of areas.
U.S. was one of India’s largest trading
partner and a significant investor in India. He
also apprised Ambassador Rao of Amcham’s
Doorknock delegation to the U.S. in June 2011.
Mrs.
Nirupama Rao reiterated the strong relationship
between India and the U.S.and said that the strategic
dialogue between the two countries was progressing
well as it had established a strong architecture.
She assured that the Indian Government would continue
its reform policy and said that the new Direct
Tax Code and Goods and Services Tax, once introduced,
will create an efficient tax system. The Government
was also in the process of coming out with a National
Manufacturing Policy which will increase the share
of manufacturing in GDP.
Mrs.
Rao also invited Amcham members to continue this
dialogue with the Indian Government and extended
an invitation to members to meet with her whenever
they visited the U.S.
